RE: What does a CG restriction called 'no rain ditching' mean?

Too funny! It never had anything to do with RV's, or utility lines, it's ditching around tents!
ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!
What a way to spend time waiting for it to get cool enough to go to the lake swimming!

RE: Denali -- Green Bus -- 100's of Photos

Great photo's and thanks for sharing. I had the pleasure of driving shuttle busses (Yellow School Busses)in the Park back in the late 80's. Saw some amazing sights and met some wonderful folks during those 11 hour days.
We ran for free back then, my last year (89) we got the boom mics so we didn't have to yell to tell our stories and jokes. Believe me, we chatted a LOT on those clouds-to-the-ground, rainy, foggy, muddy days! Washed lots of windows at Eielson Visitor Center too...:R
And FYI, the drivers are not supposed to be spotting wildlife, they are supposed to be watching the road! :E
Of course, driving out there day after day, they are able to quickly know if "something" is different out there. :)
It's great to hear that the wildlife sightings are still awesome. That is one park that is being managed very, very well.

RE: Renting out home?

Note that the ones who have dealt with renting, for any length of time tell similar stories.
Sure there are great experiences, I had nice folks renting one of our houses, they bought it eventually (after 4 years) but during the rental period there were several times they couldn't make the rent, one house fire, and they littered the back woods with "burned" trash consisting of cans and bottles because they didn't want to pay for trash service. The small cottage seemed to only draw deadbeats. Too much to bother writing about all of them.
It was nice that my annual trips to check out the properties were deductible on Schedule E, but...that's the only good thing I remember. For sure NOT the 3am phone call that the fire in the big house was out...
You really really need to make sure you have at least several months of mortgage and utility payments in your bank. Make sure you understand the tax laws for rental property including depreciation, and the 2 out of 5 rules. LOTS of folks don't understand that. Download Schedule E from the IRS web site and read it.

RE: Trouble for RV industry!

http://bestsmileys.com/signs9/3.gif
Ummmmmmmm, it's NOT the government that is bidding up the price of a barrel of oil, it is speculators in the stock market.
So I suppose what you folks are saying that "our" freedom to bid in the free market should be curtailed?
(I don't buy futures, personally)

If your going to blame someone, at least get it right!

RE: NEED ADVICE!!!

The Big Sky line are Montana's top end rigs, which means heaviest for the most part. There are several floor plans with different weights.
Please help these nice folks out by being more specific with the trailer you are interested in.
My initial guess is that the weight you post is the base model dry weight and has nothing to do with the real world numbers. You will be looking at more like to 15+K.
But generally I would say nothing short of a one ton for any Big Sky.
Happy shopping!

RE: Not really technology - but found on the internet

It is an interesting rig, as far as I can remember that website has been posted every year or so for a few years now.
What I would really like to know is has anyone actually seen one in person?
I think a more logical one (for us regular folks budgets) is the Travelwave 360 , which we have seen.
Much to our dissapointment it was parked in a storage area at a park we were staying in so couldn't do more than walk around the outside. It looked really good though.

RE: THOUSAND TRAILS "ALLIANCE" FEATURE INPUT

With an Alliance membership you will always have a reservation window 30 days further out than ANY future memberships sold. Currently we can reserve 150 days out.
That is one of the best features for us with our membership we have that was passed down from my hubbys parents. They were original members who took the Alliance deal.
Of course, the deal samsontdog has would be very rare to find anymore, I believe.

RE: Just ordered a new tent! Any thoughts?

wintek gave you excellent advice, so I would just like to emphasize to seal those seams as soon as you get it, and get the ground cloth.
You can get the rip stop nylon by the yard usually at places like Joann Fabric to make your own. Don't allow anything to touch the sides as that will cause wicking.
Tent camping many miles up rivers in Alaska was incentive to make sure to take excellent care of our equipment. Most tents will serve you well for occasional trips but you do get what you pay for. If you want to go up in quality, check out Mountain Hardware, we have their Trango 3 with many many nights on wilderness canoe and boat trips hunting and sightseeing using ours and it is as good as new after almost 15 years.
Websites like REI have good info to learn about what to look for in buying equipment.
We look forward to floating the rivers in the Ozarks. :)

RE: Not looking good for the RV Industry.........

The drop sounds worse than it is because the sales over the last few years that they are "dropping from" were at record highs.
Inflated highs, show drastic drops. I bet if you go back several years to do the comparisons, the drop would be non-existent or nominal.
Same as housing.
I do know that this area of the country does not appear to be greatly impacted by the drop in housing sales as the prices were not inflated to begin with.
LOTS of folks are retiring here. It's downright booming in the Branson area. Housing is still a great bargain compared to most of the rest of the country, of course having retirement income is important, as the wages are relatively lower also.

RE: Forums vs. Blogs...

The Datastorm listing only includes folks who want to be listed and those who update their information every 10 days. IE, you drop off the list if you don't send your location information regularly.
It's a very cool system. Anyone using Hughes satellite can register, not just Datastorm users.
Blogspot/Blogger is the biggie of the blog sponsors. The link to Datastorm users isn't really a listing of blog sites, it just shows the internet presence of those who choose to list them (and who have not fallen off the map, like us).

RE: On board air UPDATE Pic added

Hubby installed the Ride Rites on both of our trucks, with the dual gages, compressors, and tanks, several years of use with only one time blowing a bag, 5 years ago in AK.
I am not familiar with not having gages, ours have a single gage with a red and a white needle to differentiate the air lines, nor do I know about a "remote", but I do know that I would not choose one as there is enough stuff to keep track of in my life as it is. Why a remote? You look down at the gages and push the appropriate switch up or down.
The Ride Rite provided products are excellent, both trucks have additional points where we can hook up the hoses stored under the drivers seats to air up water toys, tires and such also.
Mine on the Dodge is mounted on the skid plate behind the transfer case.

RE: Dodge 1 ton DRW

The important thing to know is that the generally the newer the truck, the lower the mileage. Changes to the engine for pollution and such. Also the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel hurts.
And you have to compare similar trucks. :S
My 2002 DRW gets 9ish now with the Ultra, where it got closer to 13 prior with the heavy camper loaded low 20's empty and now empty gets around 17. Hubby has a 2003 Ford 1 ton SRW, and used to get 23+ empty cruising, 13 towing the Raptor and now closer to 19 and 10-11.
Blame it on the pollution "remedy's". :(

Only the antique RV's have ice boxes now, so unless yours in an antique, you have a refrigerator. :)
Try to make sure everything that goes in is cold to begin with.

RE: Purchasing in Montana

Most folks set up an LLC (Limited Liability Company) in Montana to register there vehicle through. That is where the big savings would be for tax. The "company" owns the rig.
Unless you are considering that, you usually must pay the sales tax in the state you register the rig in.
It's a bit more complicated that just going to Montana to shop and buy.

RE: Awning rooms

We have the Carefree room for our truck camper and two for the fiver. Had one for our last RV also. Excellent product quality and they really do expand your living space.
There is a big difference in quality between the other manufacturers and Carefree in the rooms. Compare.
There are some pics of the room in use on my Webshots page.

RE: Getting rid of your stuff

We were incredibly lucky in that we had folks wanting to buy our log home in Alaska since the first time they came to a party there a few years before.
Willing buyer, willing seller.
We sat on the deck over beer came up with the selling price on the property, then started adding the price we wanted on the furnishings such as the real antler chandelier and almost all of the other "stuff" including almost all kitchen items.
A friend bought the sofa, another bought the DR set (got what I paid for it 12 years prior) and the rest went to Goodwill in several truck loads.
We were out living in our fiver in 10 days and closed two weeks later using only a title company for about $400.
Perfect situation.
